We Are Family Hindi Movie Review: ***
First things first, a round of applause for Karan Johar who has again brought in a cult in Bollywood, held his head high and managed to blatantly state that “We Are Family” is a copy of Chris Columbus’ “Stepmom”! We definitely would appreciate more of such honest confessions and true professionalism! Wake up Bollywood!

Now, coming to the movie, agreed that makers had already confided in that “We Are Family” is nothing more than being the desi-version of “Stepmom”, but you cannot blame Indians when they say “yeh dil maange more”, isn’t it? That is what we, as critics, want to honestly and truly enunciate to Siddharth P Malhotra and Karan Johar as well. With the likes of Kajol and Kareena sharing the screen space, the audiences are bound to expect the celluloid to sizzle and sputter! “We Are Family” manages to do so in some scenes, but by far, it remains as a scene by scene re-portrayal of the cult roles that we have already witnessed. A little bit of originality coupled, with shots of chemistry and freshness, would have done the trick. Nevertheless, it is a good attempt; taking into consideration the best in the industry were shouldering the responsibility.

Let’s unravel the movie in shades of black and white. “We Are Family” gets a shade of grey for cinematography. Mohanam does a good job behind the camera, making the movie look appealing and pretty. But the question is, name any of Karan Johar’s movies that looked bad, lest appalling? What intrigues us the most that despite being shot in Sydney, Australia, the film manages to rip itself off any locals, activities or sounds! Talking about the screenplay, Venita Coelho scores a grey. The screenplay no doubt is good (that is the reason it was adapted in the first place), but lacks streaks of originality. While we have some out-of-the-ordinary scenes, you just cannot overlook having some absolutely clichéd ones as well. The music score gets a black mark, as the trio of Shankar-Ehsan-Loy makes it certain that you remember nothing when out of the theatre.

Comparing “We are Family” with “Stepmom”, there is a slight drift when it comes to emotional display. While the latter had a tinge of lightness to it, our very own desi version is full of scenes wherein grief and sobriety take the center stage. Except for a few scene here and there, you are surely gonna need a couple of dry tissues, as the film promises to activate your tear ducts. It is for you to decide which shade you want to give it to make you cry – black or white? And now, coming to the performance, we have a winner in hand. No points for guessing, yes it is our very own Kajol, the powerhouse of acting. Stamping her way ahead, Kajol yet again proves her mettle and comes out as a clear winner in “We Are Family”. She is simply outstanding and fantastical. She provides the heart and soul to the flick. Kareena and Arjun are not far behind and manage to squeeze in some of their prowess as well. So, we have a white flag for Kajol, while Kareena and Arjun got to be satisfied with a grey one!

Our recommendation – watch it guys! You, of course, don’t want to miss a chance wherein Kajol is all up sleeves to make you cry!

We Are Family Pre-release Review

After the highly-celebrated success of ‘My Name is Khan’, Karan Johar is back with his much-awaited and eagerly anticipated film, ‘We Are Family’. Apparently a desi version of the 1998 Chric Columbus’ Hollywood movie ‘Stepmom’, the movie stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal as the protagonists. Directed by newcomer Sidharth P. Malhotra, the movie has been produced by Karan Johar under the banner Dharma Productions and Sony Pictures. The lyrics have been written by Irshad Kamil and Anvita Dutt Guptan, while the renowned music-director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has composed the music. ‘We Are Family’ is set for a 10th September, 2010 release.

Kajol essays the role of Susan Sarandon as Maya, while Arjun Rampal plays Ed Harris as Aman and Kareena Kapoor as the fun-loving Shreya, portraying Julia Roberts. ‘We Are Family’ revolves around a perfect family with a mother, dad and three kids, Aleya (Aanchal Munjal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsburg) and Anjali (Diya Sonecha). Then, what’s missing? Maya and Aman are divorced, but they make sure that the kids are well-looked after. Hence, they continue to live together to constitute a happy family unit. Enters Shreya, a career-oriented and highly ambitious woman, as Aman’s girlfriend, who en-routes the situation to a completely different road. Maya has been diagnosed with cancer and has no option, but to accept Shreya in her family as the stepmother.

Helpless, Maya has to confide to Shreya about her ill health, regardless of their varied differences. With the two women under the same roof, can they get out of this unusual situation? Will Shreya be ever able to learn the aspects of a family and children? Can two mothers make a home? With the three lead characters making a perfect trio, we can hope to see some fire on the screen. Let’s wait till 10th September, 2010 and see whether Maya will be successful in completing her family and proudly say ‘We Are Family’.
